On the shores of Clear Lake, the Lake County Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Clear Lake Seaplane Splash on September 17, 2016.  The seaplanes will come out of Clear Lake onto land at Natural High Grounds at 810 North Main Street in Lakeport.  Open to the public, adults $3, children under 12 are free.

Spectators will have the opportunity to speak one on one with pilots and get up close and personal views of the planes.   The Splash In Committee has arranged for a sound system by City of Light so everyone on the field can hear what’s going on including the pilot briefing, what planes are there and descriptions of aerial demonstrations over the lake demonstrations later in the day.

The day’s activities include

  • a pancake breakfast at 8am ($7/person) put on by the Lakeport Kiwanis Club to benefit Boy Scout Troop 42
  • a pilot’s briefing at 9 am to cover what demonstrations they will be doing over the water beginning around Noon
  • a display of classic cars and trucks, Lakeport Fire District will be on site with one of their trucks and firemen to talk about their great work in our community.

The first Kelseyville Pear Festival, sponsored by the Kelseyville Business Association, was held Saturday, October 16, 1993, with a handful of street vendors, a barbeque, a scarecrow contest, and a single stage for music. The one day event brought 1,500 visitors.

Today, the Kelseyville Pear Festival is held on the last Saturday in September. There are musicians and dancers on three stages, over 100 craft and food vendors, and special exhibits filling the town. In recent years, it has been a pleasure to welcome nearly 10,000 visitors.

July 4th celebrations

Lakeport’s July 4th firework display is wonderful. It takes place on a pontoon close to shore and can be seen from Library Park. Everyone comes out to watch the night sky light up with spectacular fireworks. It’s an awesome sight from the park, across the lake and with Mt Konocti in the background. You might even catch sight of the moon rising behind the now dormant volcano to make it even more memorable.
Date: Monday July 4th, 2016
Time: starts at 9:30pm
Location: Library Park, Lakeport

This year, before the display at Library Park on the 4th, there are two events on July 2nd.

There’s fireworks and racing at Lakeport Speedway.
Date: Saturday July 2nd
Time: 6:00-11:00pm
Location: Lakeport Speedway, 401 Martin Street, Lakeport

Also, Konocti Vista Casino is also hosting a Firework display. Afterwards the local band, Fargo Brothers, are giving a concert in the banquet room. Details are shown in the poster below.
Date: Saturday July 2nd
Time: starts at dusk
Location: Konocti Vista Casino, 2755 Mission Rancheria Road, Lakeport

WS July 4th 2016 FIREWORKS-KVC

Check out the other casinos for entertainment too. For example, Running Creek is hosting popular saxophonist Nancy Griffiths on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July.

Come and stay with us this July 4th weekend and within a few minutes walk you can be at Library Park to enjoy fireworks over the lake. Imagine … no need to drive anywhere!

Lakeport Speedway is also only a few blocks away. And even if you drive out to Konocti Vista or Running Creek Casino, there’s very little traffic up here in Lake County, unlike many others places in California.

Wine Adventure weekend

This weekend, May 21-22 2016, is Lake County’s Wine Adventure weekend, and though Lake County wines took Best of Class with four wines* this past January in the SF Chronicle competition, it’s still an unknown destination for many, which is why I thought I would let you know about this area and this weekend’s event.

With a “passport” that covers more than 25 vineyards/wineries in 28 locations around beautiful Clear Lake and the surrounding area, the wine adventure lives up to its name. The high elevation (most vines are above 1500 feet) with its extra UV light leads to concentrated flavors and the dramatic day-night temperature swings help retain acidity, making wines that are intense and balanced. Hence the award winning wines and increasing recognition for this region.

As a resident of Lakeport, after two years I am only now beginning to realize the many treasures to be found here. Clear Lake is not only the oldest freshwater lake in North America, its beauty is astounding with mountain ranges all around. Mt Konocti, a dormant volcano at over 4000 feet, forms a stunning backdrop to Clear Lake and the volcanic forces that created this fascinating geology also created the astounding soils for growing grapes.

Lakeport, the seat of Lake County, has old world charm, the friendliness of a small town, and a slow pace of life. The surrounding area is one of the most beautiful in northern california, enriched by its Native American history and its agriculture of pears, walnuts, olives and grapes. Now with 8,700 acres of vineyards and award winning wines, wine-tasting is “like Napa used to be”, yet this area has many more attractions and ways to give you a relaxing break.
